“The FDA has been making great efforts to inform consumers about our new and improved valtrex drug program,” said FDA spokesman Ernest Kelly. “We will continue to evaluate and approve valtrex and make available generic versions of Valtrex to patients who are eligible for the generic version of Valtrex.”
In a statement, Johnson & Johnson said: “We have long-standing relationships with patients who need valtrex treatment.”
Valacyclovir, sold as Valtrex by AstraZeneca, is a drug used to treat genital herpes, which can cause painful urination, pain during urination, and even infertility. It is available in several forms, including oral tablets, injectable forms, and creams and ointments. The FDA has approved the generic version of Valtrex to patients who are eligible for the generic version of the drug.
The FDA does not have specific data showing how much of the drug’s price difference will affect its sales. However, patients will still be able to choose which form of Valtrex they want to pay for.

“The FDA has been making great efforts to inform consumers about our new and improved valtrex drug program. We have long-standing relationships with patients who need valtrex treatment. We have a solid and well-trained staff that is available to answer your questions,” said Lee Chang, the FDA’s Commissioner for Consumer Protection.
The agency’s announcement comes after a review by FDA’s Office of the Inspector General that it concluded the drug maker’s efforts to inform consumers were “not sound.”
The agency released data showing the drugmaker has not provided adequate reasons for its withdrawal from the market. The drug maker did not return calls for comment. The agency said it expected the drugmaker to return the drug for full retail price effective July 1, 2021.
